“People Watching” by Conan Gray
Conan Gray, who is 22 years old as of the issuance of this track, has admitted that he has never experienced true love (or even dated for that matter). However, as illustrated by the chorus, he does get a kick out of watching others who are thoroughly smitten. In other words, bearing witness to the emotions displayed between such individuals makes the vocalist look forward to falling in love himself one day even more.
That is to say that he wants to experience “that love and emotion” that such couples are fortunate enough to partake of.
And what is it exactly that Conan sees? Well, without going into too much detail, he’s watching a pair of lovers who have been together for over four years and are still very much in love. Indeed the happiness displayed between the two of them is infectious, i.e. making the vocalist “happy for them” himself.
But as for the singer personally, he is suffering from a “monotone” life without the presence of love. And the way the bridge reads is that the main reason for such is Conan possessing commitment issues.
But that said, his goal is to one day meet someone who he won’t be apprehensive about fully opening up to. For then he would be a partaker of true, committed romance as opposed to being relegated to watching others relish the fruits thereof.
Facts about “People Watching”
Two other individuals, Julia Michaels and Dan Nigro, wrote this song alongside Conan Gray. The former is one of the most pervasive songwriters in the industry, in addition to having more recently launched a viable singing career of her own.
And the latter recently made a name for himself as the co-writer/producer of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” (2021) as well as most of the album it’s featured on, the chart-topping Sour (2021). And it is also Dan Nigro who produced People Watching.
This song, which is a product of Republic Records, is expected to be featured on Conan Gray’s second LP. His first, 2020’s Kid Krow, was a notable success, reaching 5th place on the Billboard 200. At the moment, there is not a set release date for the second. But nonetheless, it is tentatively entitled “Worlds Apart”.
Conan Gray has scored one big hit to date, which was 2020’s “Heather“, a solo effort that topped the charts in Belgium and has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA stateside.
“People Watching” was made public on 14 July 2021. This is actually the third sing Conan released in 2021. The first was “Overdrive” and the second “Astronomy“.
