“Plentiful” by Alicia Keys (ft. Pusha T)

The first verse of Alicia Keys’ “Plentiful” is held down by Pusha T, and honestly speaking it’s not abundantly clear what the thesis sentiment of his passage is. But once Alicia comes into the mix via the second verse, it becomes a lot more apparent that “Plentiful” is actually a religious or spiritually-based song.

And the main point being put across, most simply relayed, is that Alicia (and by extension Pusha) is in fact blessed by what we will, in context, refer to as the plenteousness of God. And basically, she is thanking Him for her success, which the vocalist believes is founded in her faith in a Higher Power.

In that regard Keys also poetically references the creation of Man as relayed in the Book of Genesis. This is in addition to giving a shoutout to her moms, who held her down in a more earthly manner.

But at the end of the day, “Plentiful” is not really about the vocalists per se, but it can be said macrocosmically speaking to the notion that God is so plentiful He blesses us all, i.e. the afore-noted Genesis reference. And it may also be useful to take note of the fact that Alicia refers to her mom as “holy”, considering that the cover art to the album this song is derived from seems to be based on a Catholic Madonna-inspired motif.
