“Shether” by Remy Ma

In “Shether”, Remy pays homage and takes inspiration from Nas’s diss track to Jay-Z “Ether“, giving a blatant female diss version aimed at Nicki Minaj. Remy adopts the same arrangement in “Ether” for this track as she uses a similar intro and hook.

The rapper launches a scathing attack on Nicki by talking about her butt implants, her former relationship with Safaree and Meek Mill, and how she took advantage of her incarceration to rise to popularity. Remy further accuses Nicki of sleeping with the likes of Lil Wayne, Meek and Drake in order to attain her status in the industry, while suggesting that she uses ghostwriters and lacks rap talent.

The rapper further reveals the complexities of Nicki’s record deal, implying that she makes less money since a lot of people take their cut from her earnings. She then suggests that Nicki is rather a bad influence considering the fact that more young women died from butt enhancements around the same time she was growing in popularity. She also cites how Nicki supports her brother Jelani who was charged with the rape of a 12-year old girl, and concludes by proposing that Nicki relies on men for success who in turn take advantage of her. The outro of the song sees Remy warning Nicki not to mess with her or throw indirect shots at her.

The Beef between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj

Even though it could be classified as long-standing, the beef between Remy and Nicki never proved to be anything significant outside of a few personal diss tracks. It allegedly dates back to 2007. This was when Minaj dropped a line in a freestyle called “Dirty Money” that may be interpreted as an insult against Remy.

Remy didn’t bother to retaliate for a good seven years, as she was locked up from 2007 to 2014. And even upon being released, it appeared that any ill will she may have had toward Minaj was dead. However, shortly thereafter Remy began dropping lyrics which could be seen as jabs against Nicki Minaj. And the latter, being who she is, counter-dissed.

This led to what many fans feel was the highlight of this entire beef, Remy Ma’s 2017 track “ShETHER”. This tirade included referencing Nicki’s brother, who was arrested for sexual assault. And overall, even outside of the tongue-lashing, fans were impressed with Remy’s overall lyrical display.

Less than a month after “Shether”, Nicki responded on a track called “No Frauds” alongside fellow hip-hop superstars Drake and Lil Wayne. It should be noted that Drake and Wayne did not diss Remy.  In “No Frauds”, Nicki seems to have referenced Remy Ma’s husband, another popular rapper named Papoose. And the situation almost degenerated into an all-out feud featuring all of the above.

However, the beef died down shortly thereafter. And Remy even went on to say that she was “not particularly proud of” her quarrel with Minaj.
