“Super Gremlin” by Kodak Black

The term “gremlin”, as most notably used in this song (“Super Gremlin”), points to the concept of Kodak Black ingesting Percocet, just because he’s wild like that. But that said, this piece doesn’t appear to be intended as a drug ode or anything like that.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Kodak Black's Super Gremlin at Lyrics.org.

Instead being a “super gremlin”, based on the lyrics, is actually akin to, most simply put, being a violent criminal. That is to say that by the time all is said and done, the primary lyrical emphasis is on the vocalist being a real n*gga in the street sense. Simply put, he is someone who lives by the gun, stays on top of his game and has even managed to beat the system.

The Narrative

Despite the above said, this isn’t a case of Kodak flat-out boasting in the traditional rap sense. Instead there is a narrative featured throughout a good portion of this song which is aimed at a specific addressee. But as implied above, even therein Kodak uses the opportunity to push the idea that he’s not afraid of anyone and is up to any challenge.

However, the aforementioned addressee is presented in an opposing light. In fact the chorus and first verse read like a straight-up diss track. And who Black is bringing it to is a former homey whom, under his estimation, has sold out.

Or put differently, throughout this friendship, it was Kodak, via his fearless exploits, who made said friend street official by association. In other words, the vocalist is hard, but the addressee is not, so the former served as a de facto protector of the latter. Moreover, Kodak comes off like he held the two of them down on the business tip also.

But somewhere along the line, the addressee ‘crossed’ or betrayed him. It is not really specified what this individual did, but Black basically accuses dude of lying on him in a defamatory manner.

Who is this “fake” friend?

Whereas no names are dropped, there is a prevailing conspiracy theory who this so called “dishonest” friend is. According to this theory, Kodak is dissing Jackboy, a longtime homey of his who, according to him, recently took legal action against him.

And such a theory is very much feasible for two reasons. The first is because the lyrics, albeit being a bit vague, seem to apply to their relationship. Secondly, because this is rap music – a genre where friends can become outspoken enemies hella fast.

What “Super Gremlin” is all about

So conclusively yes, “Super Gremlin” can be considered a proper diss song. But underneath it all, the thesis sentiment doesn’t revolve around Kodak being pissed off as a result of betrayal. Instead what all the lyrics ultimately point to is the notion of him being a real street n*g*a – or a “super gremlin”, as termed.

And relatedly, the reason he’s angry is because a long-time associate has convincingly proven himself not to live up to that standard.

Kodak Black

Kodak Black has officially been doing his thing since around the mid-2010s. And in the years that followed he came out with or participated on various platinum hits. Also, he has also proven to be one of those types of rappers who is consistently in trouble with the lawetc. and in the news accordingly.

But that said, as alluded he has also remained pertinent musically. And “Super Gremlin” can be ranked amongst his hits. For example, this song reached the pinnacle of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs listing.

Furthermore, “Super Gremlin” swiftly climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release. It took no time to give Kodak a top-10 hit on this listing.

What are “spinnin’ drops” in this instance? I was thinking Percs (the counterfeit Oxy 30’s aka ‘blues’) but also wondered if he meant as a child when they’d spin in circles til they were dizzy and would drop (fall down) because the verse is followed by “Still only a child, but fateful error” And “STG” in prison is a Security Threat Group (any gang member, skinheads, Mexican Mafia etc) So, perhaps all the SG references are about being part of a Security Group as identified by the man. Unless SG is an acronym for a street gang that I’m unfamiliar with. SG can also mean exactly what he said but I think Sniper Gang/Super Gangster is where he’s going with that one but can’t be 100% certain.

I left a comment regarding your question under BabyJ. I just put the answer after my question regarding spinnin’ drops. My bad I didn’t just hit ‘reply’ for my answer to your question… I think it’s comment 4 or 5. It isn’t showing yet because I’m sure they need to approve it 1st before it goes live and when I tried to add it to your question it said I was posting comments too quickly so I need to slow my role lol. Freedom of Speech as long as you speak SLOWLY. hahaha
