“The Exit” by Conan Gray

On “The Exit”, we find Conan Gray lamenting the fact that the person he’s in love with has found another girl. Yes, the lyrics do read as if Conan is taking on the role of a female, i.e. beefing because the addressee, his romantic interest, is “staring at a girl who is not (him)”. Or all things considered, a more responsible explanation, even though the vocalist doesn’t use any gender pronouns to refer to himself nor the addressee, is that the latter is another man (i.e. a bisexual) or a female who’s a lesbian.

But once you get past that particularly-intriguing part of the narrative, what we are met with is a more or less standard heartbreak piece. In other words, yes, by the looks of things Conan was unceremoniously dumped. And as such musical outings tend to go, his emotional pain is exacerbated by the fact that the addressee pretty much blindsided him in doing so. In other words, as illustrated in the first verse, just recently everything was all gravy between the two of them. But then it’s as if the other party suddenly lost interest or more specifically became more smitten with someone else.

So as it currently stands, the vocalist himself is “at the exit”. That is to say that Conan feels as if the person he loves has given him the boot. So now the vocalist is faced with the emotional reality of having to contend with the romance he was in, which just a few months prior appeared as if it had a strong future, now being abruptly “over”, and himself being on the losing end of that equation.

The (theoretical) female in the song could still be a lesbian or bi+, just not interested in Conan anymore.
