The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” Lyrics Meaning
The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” is a modern-day rock classic. And like many classic tracks, it features a plotline which is easy-to-follow and that fans can relate to.
In this case, the singer is dealing with infidelity and heartbreak. He has fallen in love with someone who, succinctly put, is seeing another dude. Or at least that is what he is thoroughly convinced is transpiring, as it appears to have no hard evidence.
This experience ultimately leads to the singer dubbing himself “Mr. Brightside”. That is to say that despite going through emotional hell, he is trying to stay optimistic and look for the ‘bright side’, as in the advantages, of going through this situation. Or as he alludes to, it is actually his “destiny” not to be with this woman.
So ultimately, the theme of this track is a guy coming to terms with the fact that the woman he loves and indeed has built some type of romantic relationship with apparently loves someone else.

Who wrote “Mr. Brightside”?
The music for this song was written first, by The Killers’ guitarist Dave Keuning. Upon hearing the riff Keuning created, the band’s lead singer, Brandon Flowers, composed the lyrics quickly. This is the reason why the song only features one (repeated) verse.
Part of his inspiration when writing the lyrics was David Bowie’s 1971 song “Queen Bitch”. But the narrative of the song itself is actually based on a real-life experience Brandon Flowers went through.
The entire band produced “Mr. Brightside” in collaboration with record producer Jeff Saltzman.
