“Afterlife” by Hailee Steinfeld

On “Afterlife”, the songstress (Hailee Steinfeld) appears as if she is addressing an unappreciative lover. And as such she is questioning the level of his commitment, in terms of would it even extend into the “afterlife”. She’s apparently asking him the question: will he love her ’til death does them part – and then even after that? Or another way of looking at it is that Steinfeld is trying to truly ascertain whether this partner is eternally-dedicated.

This is due to her obviously being committed, as in considering the addressee to be the one whom her heart will forever belong to. But the gist of what Hailee is ultimately trying to put forth is that whereas he may take her for granted now, once she is gone – specifically within of the context of this song passed way – then he will truly be able to perceive her worth. So it is very much possible that the person she is addressing is a spouse. And overall, the general idea is tantamount to the age-old proverb of an individual, particularly in this case an established romantic partner, being unable to appreciate the value of his mate until that person is indeed gone.
