“Chasing After You” by Ryan Hurd & Maren Morris

Letting the cat out of the bag early for those who don’t know, Ryan Hurd and Maren Morris are husband and wife in real life. So seeing them hugged up like that on the cover art of “Chasing After You”, there’s genuine affection behind those stares. But that said, this song was written by two other individuals and is not based on the vocalists’ marriage, though Morris did find some similarities therein.

As the lyrics read, what we are dealing with is a romance where one of the participants, the female, is a transient lover. That is to say that as presented, she has the tendency to pop in and out of her partner’s life. It is poetically implied that she may only come around in times of emotional or material need.

So it’s like they’re both “chasing after” each other. That is to say that no matter how many times she may behave like this, the male remains powerless to turn her away regardless. As for Maren’s character, it’s like she’s trying to “quit” the relationship, but the love she’s receiving from Ryan is “too good” to permanently do so.

Concerning how this may apply to their actual relationship, Maren has stated that, even though the song is once again fictional to their experience, at one point earlier on she and Ryan were stuck in the friend zone despite having feelings for each other.

Facts about “Chasing After You”

“Chasing After You” hit store shelves on 12 February 2021, serving as the lead single from Ryan Hurd’s debut studio album, “Pelago”. This is a project that was released by Sony Music Nashville, the label Hurd signed with in 2017. Between then and “Chasing After You”, he had scored one other hit, that being 2018’s “To a T”.

Meanwhile, Maren Morris is a more established musician, having been professionally active for nearly a decade prior to Ryan Hurd. She too however just began dropping singles in 2016 and, most simply put, has been a lot more successful than her husband.

Maren and Ryan have also been professional partners for some years. But “Chasing After You” seems to mark the first time they actually dropped a duet together.

The writers of this song are Jerry Flowers and Brinley Addington. It had been in the system for some years, before Ryan and Maren decided to finally tackle it. They recorded the vocals in their basement, apparently during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“Chasing After You” was produced by the combined efforts of the following record producers:

  • Aaron Eshuis
  • Teddy Reimer

This song proved to be a solid hit, appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 and also making it onto the top 10 of the 2021 US Hot Country Songs chart. Additionally, the track has been certified platinum in the United States.

Moreover, it topped a non-Billboard list called the US Country Radio Mediabase chart, an achievement which both Maren and Ryan acknowledged.
