“Complicated” by Avril Lavigne

The singer is in a “complicated” relationship because of the mannerisms of her significant other. When they are alone everything is all good. He makes her laugh, and she appreciates him for who he is. However, he puts on a different face when he’s around other people, i.e. “trying to be cool” and what have you. And when he behaves like that, she is totally turned off. So now the relationship has reached a point where she is generally uncomfortable in it. And utlatimaly, Avril Lavigne conceptualized this tune as criticism of people who don’t keep it real.

Facts about “Complicated”

This was the first song Avril Lavigne ever released. It came out on the date of 23 April 2002. And “Complicated” was issued as the lead single from her debut album, “Let Go”. It was followed by the singles “Sk8er Boi” and “I’m with You“.

Avril co-wrote this song along with Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards and Scott Spock.  And the same three artists, under the collective name The Matrix, also produced the tune.

The music video to “Complicated” was directed by two brothers known as The Malloys.

The song proved to be a massive hit. For example, it topped music charts in 10 nations, including the Canadian Singles Chart, European Hot 100 and Billboard’s Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 in the US.

In all, it charted in nearly 30 countries and received a plethora of certifications, such as going double-Platinum in Australia.

The track went on to take home a couple of ASCAP Pop Music Awards (2003 & 2004, Most Performed Song), two BMI Pop Music Awards (2003 & 2004, Award-Winning Song), an Ivor Novello Award (International Hit of the Year), a couple of MTV VMAs (in Japan and the US) and so on.

In fact it ultimately wound up being declared one of Billboard’s “Hot 100 Songs of the Decade”, having sold in excess of 3,000,000 copies as of 2015. And despite being Avril Lavigne’s debut song, it is also the second best-seller she dropped in her heyday, only being bested in performance by 2007’s “Girlfriend”.
