“Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” is actually a love song or more specifically a heartbreak song. The title serves as a metaphor for the singer coming to realize that the guy she loves is no longer interested in her. And to make a long story short, she goes about detailing how she is emotionally devastated due to this unfavorable turn of events.  And basically, riding around with her newly acquired “driver’s license” serves as a reminder just how much she misses him.

Facts about “Drivers License”

Olivia Rodrigo is an actress/singer who actually made a name for herself as part of the cast of a couple of Disney series. And she has recorded a number of songs on behalf of Disney, especially as part of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But “Drivers License” is the first track she has ever dropped as an independent artist – or rather as a signee of Geffen Records. And it is to be featured on her debut EP, which at the time of release of the song remains nameless. But the release date of the track itself was on January 8th, 2021.

Rodrigo wrote “Drivers License” alongside Dan Nigro, the latter of whom also produced the track.

As is the case pretty much anytime a celebrity drops a love song, there have been rumors that this song is addressed to one of the vocalist’s peers. And in this case that would be one Joshua Bassett, who co-starred with Olivia Rodrigo on High School Musical. Moreover in terms of this particular track, there is actual lyrical evidence supporting said theory.

It should be noted that the song’s title (“drivers license”) is wrongly spelt. The correct spelling is “driver’s license“. It is not exactly clear why Rodrigo and her team maintained the wrong spelling for the title.

That being said, it is quite common in the music world for certain words to be misspelt in the titles of songs. A famous example is the Smiths’ 1986 song titled “Cemetry Gates“.

Summary

To make a long story short, “Drivers License” is all about Olivia being in her feelings. And she finds herself in this state because she has been dumped by her sweetheart.

Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett’s Relationship

Olivia and Joshua are the two main stars of the Disney+ series High School Musical, which began in 2019. In fact they portray romantic interests, respectively Nini and Ricky, on the show. And there have been rumors that that two of them were dating behind the scenes. However, neither one of actors had ever come forth to confirm such a notion.

Concurrently there have also been theories floating about that Joshua was actually going out with a singer named Sabrina Carpenter. And many people point to “Drivers License” as proof that such is actually the case. In other words, they believe that Rodrigo is singing about Bassett. And what she is upset about is his decision to date Carpenter over her.
