“Heaven” by Calum Scott

In explaining this track (“Heaven”), Calum Scott has stated that the goal of its writers was to present a creatively-new love song. But of course, likening the relationship with your significant other to “heaven” is one of the most well-worn metaphors in the music industry.

However, in this case, the vocalist does take things a step further. And what is saying, most simply put, is that being thoroughly smitten is actually superior to the “Heaven” of the afterlife. That is to say that he has already found complete fulfillment in his existence via his relationship with the addressee. Or more specifically, the way he sees it is that life isn’t a quest where the main enjoyment comes in the hereafter. Moreover, he cannot imagine anything being more pleasurable than this romance. So Calum feels he is “already” in heaven in the here and now.

So generally speaking, the metaphor upon which this song is based may not be anything new. But what is a bit unusual is that the lyrics are imbued with what some may deem a religious snub, i.e. putting forth that being in love with that special someone is preferable to what many spiritually-minded people perceive as paradise.
