“Rise” by Calum Scott

Perhaps in the grand scheme of things, it can be said that there’s no such thing as too much encouragement. As such, it is with open arms that analysts have embraced Calum Scott’s latest effort, “Rise”.

The title/chorus is in fact a personalized, roundabout admonishment for listeners to “rise” in a metaphorical sense. The title is telling listeners to stand up to challenges, both internally and externally, instead of being bested by them. 

And ultimately the specific advice being offered in that regard, i.e. remaining focused and persistent, by this point wouldn’t be anything we haven’t heard before. But again, amidst the ongoing challenges in the world or whatever, it doesn’t really seem to hurt to have pop musicians remind us every now and then to continue to forge ahead. 

And on this piece, Calum is sorta taking on the role of the underdog. He plays the role of someone who hasn’t blown up yet and still struggling. However, he knows that inevitably all who bear witness to his struggles will ‘see him rise’.

In an interview, Calum said of “Rise” as a song that he wrote to encourage people not to allow the challenges of life defeat them. He further stated that the goal was to compose a song that has the ability to “empower people” to never give up on their dreams despite the obstacles in their way.

Calum Scott and “Rise”

Add Calum Scott to the list of professional musicians who can trace their success back to the reality-TV/competition circuit, in his case being Britain’s Got Talent. He participated on the show during early 2015. And despite finishing in sixth place, he has, in the aftermath, apparently proven more professionally successful than any of the other participants. 

In 2018, he released his “Only Human” project, which reached fourth place on the UK Albums Chart.  And as it usually tends to go with reality TV stars, the early goings were particularly kind to Scott. His debut single for instance, 2016’s “Dancing on My Own”, was a triple-platinum hit in the US and UK.

“Rise” is about the 10^th single in Calum Scott’s discography. The song was issued, as a standalone, on 1 October 2021 via Capitol Records. 

The tune was written by Calum Scott alongside one of its three producers, Gabe Simon. And the other co-producers are Jon Maguire and Zak Lloyd.
