“Imperfections” by Celine Dion
The lyrics of Celine Dion’s “Imperfections” focus on the universal theme of self-criticism. That is to say that it is based on the singer perceiving her own “imperfections” or flaws.
However this is not done so using the common pop-music trope of berating herself, crying about her past or engaging in self-destructive activities as a result. Rather she brings up this topic specifically in relation to the fact that she is reluctant to commit wholeheartedly to a certain relationship. This association is, by insinuation, romantic in nature. And for the most part what Celine is telling the addressee, i.e. her romantic interest, throughout is that she is not keen on the idea of dedicating herself to their union. She can’t do so until she irons out her own issues, as in learns to love herself.
But near the end there is a twist! In the bridge, she states that she is devoted to this individual and doesn’t want to lose him in the midst of tackling her own faults. As such, she implores him to accept her, imperfections and all. Indeed it is these same blemishes which have helped fashion her into the person she is today.
So basically, she is entreating him to accept her just as she currently is, despite the fact that she cannot fully accept herself. Thus there is a sense of finality here. Celine has realized that actually overcoming her “imperfections” isn’t something she’ll be able to accomplish in the short term. In other words, while acknowledging the importance of dedicating time to personal growth, she also recognizes the basic human need for love and companionship.
