“Courage” by Celine Dion

In this song, Celine Dion is addressing to titular emotion of “courage”. In other words, she is speaking to this inner feeling as if it is another person.  And she is referring to it as a faithful companion who has stuck with her through difficult times. Indeed in the bridge she indicates that “in the world of madness”( i.e. the present day reality we live in) without courage, life would be more difficult than it already is.

It is also arguable that in some parts of the track, especially say the first verse and refrain, she is addressing someone tantamount to a deceased loved one.  It is well known that Celine has lost a couple of close family members in recent years. One example is her husband, René Angélil (1942-2016). So perhaps what she is initially relaying is something along the lines of still having conversations with him, even though he is departed. This would obviously indicate that she still has a dependency on this individual, despite his lack of presence. Thus to this day dealing with such a significant loss still requires “courage” on the part of the singer.

But that being said, what can definitely be ascertained is that the singer leans heavily on courage. Furthermore, she perceives it as perhaps the most-important inner quality to help her get through the challenges of life.
