Ashley Cooke has revealed that her song “It’s Been a Year” is autobiographical in essence, reflecting what she actually experienced during 2022. As Cooke has explained, 2022 witnessed the songstress sign her first record deals.
Additionally she went on five tours and met scores of new people, amongst them being some that she has high reverence for. It wasn’t all gravy but rather hard work, where Ashley spent more time dealing with the challenges of the road than in the comfort of her own home.
She also fell in love yet proceeded to also watch the relationship promptly fail within that timeframe. But that said, the year was so monumental in her personal history that she wouldn’t change anything about it.
And so it is with the thesis sentiment of this track. As more specifically expressed in the song, Ashley had been “grinding” so hard that she didn’t even feel the year pass by. So now amidst taking a breather or looking back, she has realized that it’s actually been that long since she’s seen her aging grandparents.
The vocalist also recalls that her bestie recently had a little girl, one she has yet to meet, who should be a year old by now.
The songstress dedicates the entire second verse to the aforenoted failed romance. Keeping within the motif of the lyrics, she presents it as one that has now been defunct for a year, with her not really feeling the time pass. But more to the point is the singer coming off as if her ex had done her dirty.
But again, all things considered, the thesis sentiment of “It’s Been a Year” is a celebratory one. The positive result of the vocalist busting her hump over the last 365 days has resulted in her ‘doing a lot more than she thought she could’ in the process. So now, she is looking forward to facing 2023. Yet and still, she’s also convinced it will not top 2022, which the narrator seems to regard as the best year of her life.
