Kali Uchis’ “I Wish you Roses” Lyrics Meaning

There’s certain wording in “I Wish you Roses” which does infer that the featured relationship is a romantic one. But Kali Uchis has revealed that its applicability transcends the realm of romance and can be applied to a number of different relationship types.

More importantly is its key sentiment. This sentiment revolves around the vocalist wishing the addressee well, wherever he or she may be headed into the future.

But the song in its entirety is not that simple. For instance, Kali comes off as if she is a bit defensive, as if reaffirming her own self-esteem amidst the addressee not wanting to deal with her any longer. Or viewed from a different angle, let’s say that the implicit challenge behind the thesis sentiment, would consist of being able to wish someone well in their future endeavors, despite said individual failing to fully value your friendship to begin with.

Also to note, Kali does ultimately conclude this piece by expressing a confidence that the addressee will eventually ‘want her back’, though she’s already decided she won’t go there again. So to reiterate, these lyrics read a lot more like they’re speaking to a troubled romance as opposed to a fractured friendship. Furthermore, they imply that the addressee dumped the vocalist.

In conclusion

Perhaps we can say that Uchis is being the bigger person in this equation, speaking favorable words over someone who, under her estimation, did her wrong.  But it’s obvious that she also harbors some resentment, to the point of looking forward to paying the addressee back, if you will, later down the line.
