“Leave Me Alone” by NF

The easiest way to summarize “Leave Me Alone” is as it being based on NF’s mental-health issues. And he appears to have quite a few, including the rapper being “diagnosed with OCD” (obsessive-compulsive disorder) as well as apparently suffering from depression, negative self-esteem and double-mindedness. Indeed who he is directing the titular statement to in a roundabout way is actually himself (as illustrated in the third verse). That is to say that he is tormented by inner voices and more specifically his own success.

In fact the main theme of this song is the internal conflict NF is suffering from due to his multi-platinum achievements. For instance, despite possessing various “plaques” in honor of his accomplishments, he keeps them ‘hidden inside the closet’. Moreover he more or less ignores his fandom by being reluctant to do interviews or use social media. And conclusively he displays an attitude in which he is not overly interested in “fame”, a sentiment he has also expressed on previous songs in the past.

So there is a lot of uncover in this track, which is actually longer than a traditional rap. But what it is actually centered on in its entirety is the desire of the artist to be ‘left alone’. That is to say that he does not want to be bothered, which is indeed a precarious position for a celebrity entertainer to be in.  Moreover at different points in the song who exactly he seems to be expressing this sentiment towards varies. That is to say that by and large who NF wants to “leave (him) alone” is not the general public per se but rather his own success, which sometimes torments him via an inner voice.
