“Make Me Like You” by Gwen Stefani

In terms of the historical background of “Make Me Like You”, Gwen Stefani dropped it post-divorce. That’s why she admits in the lyrics that she’s “broken”. But at the same time, she lets it be known that she is quite okay with the single life. But that being said, it would seem that she met someone, the addressee, whom she has unexpectedly fallen head over heels for. So she’s kinda beefing in a sarcastic sense, asking this individual (who happens to be fellow music star Blake Shelton) why did he have to make her like (i.e. fall for) him. But behind the humor is a genuine celebration on behalf of the singer due to the fact that she has found a guy she actually loves after more or less giving up on romance.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have gained attention for being one of music’s hottest couples but they have had a fair share of individual challenges. The duo’s first encounter was in April 2014 when Stefani joined Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine as a coach on The Voice.

2015 marked the most significant year for the soon-to-be-couple as they both struggled through high-profile divorces at the same time individually. First, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert divorced after their 4-year marriage in July 2015, while Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale ended their 13-year marriage in August 2015. As the two found solace in each other while mutually enduring difficult times, they shared a selfie of themselves in September 2015, performed a duet on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October and were confirmed to be officially dating in November 2015.

Their first public appearance as a couple was at the Vanity Fair Oscars after party in February 2016, followed by a duet performance in May 2016 at the Billboard Music Awards. Blake and Gwen are reported to have bought a house and moved in together with Gwen’s sons in late 2019.
