“True Babe” by Gwen Stefani

To note “True Babe”, which was released on 23 June 2023, marks the first single Gwen Stefani has headlined since 2021’s “Slow Cap”.  And as far as singles go, the only one she participated on between then and now would be, as a feature, Sean Paul’s 2022 joint “Light My Fire”.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Gwen Stefani's True Babe at Lyrics.org.

As explained by Stefani, that delay in releasing new music has been the result of she and her team not having composed any songs she felt “(felt) really excited about”, that is until Gwen was introduced to “True Babe”.

This song was produced by K Thrash alongside a duo known as Jack & Coke, aka Jakob Hazell and Svante Haldin. Hazell and Haldin also get individualized writing credit for “True Babe”, as do the following:

  • Nicole Rubio
  • Luka Kloser
  • Jacob Kasher

THE LYRICS OF “TRUE BABE”

As presented in the chorus, there is a comma between the titular terms, thus making it read “true, babe”.  That is to say that Gwen goes about asserting that what she’s saying is indeed “true” to the addressee, who is her “babe”.

And as implied in the first verse, said addressee would be the vocalist’s ex. But as also expressed, even though they’re “old news”, these days the homey is looking “new to” Gwen. Or more simply put, as the rest of the lyrics put forth, she wants to strike up a romance with him, now having come to the realization that she ‘slept better’ when they shared a bed.

Also interesting to note is that the first line of the pre-chorus implies that the person Stefani is referring to is a fellow popular musician, like herself. Currently she is married to one of such individuals, that being Black Shelton, with the two having been a known couple since 2015.

Prior to that she was wed to another well-known singer, Gavin Rossdale, for about 15 years. So maybe it can be argued that Gwen is referring to Shelton, thus implying that perhaps they don’t see each other as often as a husband and wife ought.

But more logically, if these are meant to reflect the singer’s real-life history, then Stefani is probably referring to someone she was involved with prior to her current relationship, that most likely being Rossdale who, as the addressee is depicted in the first verse, also has a tattoo(s).

“‘Cause it’s true, babe, true, babe
I’m sleeping better next to you, babe, you, babe
You’re something sweet, something true, babe, true, babe
You do it better than they do, babe, uh-huh”

Must be Blake instead of Black.

More of a 14-15 year olds’, song far from an adult song! She still seems like she was in the 1980s or something!
