Meaning of “Better Off” by Milky Chance

The thesis sentiment of this track revolves around the vocalist telling the addressee that the latter is “better off here without” him. That statement is basically another way of recognizing that your presence is having a detrimental effect on a loved one’s life.

Or as the singer puts it, he “don’t wanna hurt” the addressee anymore.  Also, that is the type of terminology usually reserved for the likes of romantic relationships. So presumably that would be the nature of the union between the two parties involved, though such is never specified.

In fact there are certain lyrics, such as the mention of “enemies” or what have you, that may suggest otherwise. But what it appears Clemens is really alluding to via the mention of “enemies” in the pre-chorus is that his relationship with the addressee is haunted by mistakes from the past, even though both of them tried to put that history behind.

So let’s conclude by saying that whereas the featured relationship is most likely a romantic one, the lyrics have a general applicability also. And what they illustrate are the thoughts of an individual who is keeping it real with himself in a way, by recognizing that he has a toxic presence in the life of someone he obviously cares deeply about.

“You are, you are, you are
Better off here without me
You are, you are, you are better off
There’s no doubt about it
‘Cause I don’t wanna drag you down
I don’t wanna hurt you anymore
You are, you are, you are
Better off”
