Meaning of “Dial Drunk” by Noah Kahan

What’s transpiring in “Dial Drunk” is the narrator (Noah Kahan) apparently being arrested on some type of offense that involved drunkenness. Considering that he mentions “traffic lights” in the chorus, it may well be drunk driving, i.e. a charge serious enough to land Noah in a jail cell.

Under such circumstances, according to convention, the police will allow the perpetrator to make a phone call, which is to be used on their emergency contact. Ideally, that would be someone who is ever willing to make an effort to get you out of trouble.

But what these lyrics primarily revolve around is said individual, the addressee, obviously having a serious beef with the vocalist. Or put otherwise, Noah is compelled to call someone for help whom he seemingly offended, to an estranged-worthy degree, in the past.

The nature of the singer’s relationship with the addressee is not specified. The lyrics do reveal that the latter is a female, and given the tone of what’s being put forth, it’s most easy to imagine that she would be the vocalist’s ex.

“I ain’t proud of all the punches that I’ve thrown
In the name of someone I no longer know
For the shame of being young, drunk, and alone
Traffic lights and a transmitter radio
I don’t like that, when they threw me in the car
I gave your name as my emergency phone call
Honey, it rang and rang, even the cops thought you were wrong for hanging up
I dial drunk, I’ll die a drunk, I’ll die for you”

And the beginning of the chorus sorta implies, based on how one may interpret its first couple of lines, that Noah may have physically abused her under the presumption of cheating. But this is very much a read-in-between-the-lines sort of piece, so some aspects of the narrative, such as once again the exact nature of their relationship, are not clarified.

What is clear is that the addressee wants nothing to do with Kahan. Indeed, the chorus goes on to state that she even hung up the phone on the cops, presumably once she became aware of why they were calling to begin with. Or put otherwise, she has no desire to help the vocalist. But as implied at the conclusion of the second verse, she’s the only person he has to call upon.
