“Double Fantasy” by The Weeknd (ft. Future)
The Weeknd has recently decided to become a full-fledged actor, co-creating and co-starring in a hotly-anticipated HBO series which has been dubbed The Idol. Of course being that he is concurrently an established A list musician, the singer has also been heavily involved in the program’s soundtrack.
So as for “Double Fantasy”, it was released as a single from that project on 21 April 2023. It came out through the following labels:
- Republic Records
- XO Records (which was founded by The Weeknd)
- Universal Music Group
So this would be the fifth collaboration between The Weeknd and Future, the latter of whom is solely a musician and more specifically a rapper. The pair’s collaboration history would actually date back to 2015. This was when both were featured on “Drinks on Us”, a track headlined by Mike Will Made It.
To note, The Weeknd live debuted “Double Fantasy” song on April 14th while performing at Coachella under Metro Boomin.

The Weeknd, Future and Mike Dean (who has an acting role on The Idol) are credited as writers.
It has been pointed out by a couple of outlets that John Lennon (1940-1980) and his wife, Yoko Ono dropped an album in 1980 which is also titled “Double Fantasy”. But The Weeknd has clarified that as far as “The Idol Vol. 1”, i.e. the soundtrack to the series is concerned, he was actually inspired by the likes of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” (1979) and the late Prince’s “Purple Rain” (1984).
The Lyrics of “Double Fantasy”
This is a sex song with a twist, in a manner of speaking. That is to say that this is yet another one of those pieces in which the vocalist and the addressee share a pressingly-strong mutual attraction. In fact as presented, the two of them may even be considered as being akin to soulmates, i.e. relating to each other in a way that no one else can.
But the caveat is that the vocalist has concluded that the two of them hooking up on the romantic level is flat out “wrong”. As inferred in the second verse, as presented by Future, that would be because the addressee is going through a number of notable internal issues, perhaps as a result of her having “once (been) a prostitute”, which make her a less-than-ideal romantic prospect.
Thesis Sentiment
But the thesis sentiment of this piece revolves around the two of them proceeding to get hot and heavy nonetheless. Even though they share a strong, unique bond, The Weeknd has concluded that a romance between them isn’t really meant to be.
But Future harps a bit more single-mindedly on the other side of the equation, i.e. being strongly attracted to the addressee. The ultimate conclusion would be that this animal magnetism is making her irresistible.
So to reiterate, this is a theme that we seem to have been coming across increasingly common of late in love/sex songs, i.e. the featured romance being an edifying, albeit illicit one.
