Meaning of “Frozen Light” by Greta Van Fleet
The titular “frozen light”, as depicted, serves the purpose of ‘guiding’ the vocalist and his brethren “the long way home”. We will take it that the “four brothers searching for a meal” mentioned in the first verse is actually a reference to Greta Van Fleet. This band is in fact a quartet, consisting of these individuals:
- Josh Kiszka
- Danny Wagner
- Sam Kiszka
- Jake Kiszka
And as can be gleaned from their last names, three of the members are in fact brothers.
So with that in mind, what “Frozen Light” reads like, by the time all is said and done, is sort of a chillin’ or road song. And it may not be such that the vocalist and his companions are not literally “going home”. Instead that aspiration can be interpreted as being symbolic of their career aspirations, i.e. their home being on the road. This is something that is sort of a common disposition amongst professional musicians.
Or another way of interpreting this piece is as Greta Van Fleet acknowledging their hometown of Frankenmuth. Said city is found in Michigan, i.e. the northern part of the United States getting close to Canada, where temperatures typically get freezing cold during the winter months.
So maybe “Frozen Light” is intended to be a roundabout shoutout to Frankenmuth, whereas Josh does so, besides alluding to homesickness by also pointing to one of the ‘hood’s most-notable characteristics, which would be its chilliness.
