“The Indigo Streak” by Greta Van Fleet

“The Indigo Streak” is another Greta Van Fleet song where it is more or less up to the listener to come to their conclusion concerning what the band is singing about. It is clear that these lyrics aren’t willy-nilly but rather point to some concise idea, phenomenon and/or individual.

For instance, the way “the Indigo Streak” is depicted in the third verse sorta reads like maybe Josh could be referring to something like a comet. But to note, based on the lyrics as transcribed by Genius, said “Indigo Streak” is actually a proper noun, not the vocalist’s artistic description of what he perceives per se.

But the wording of the rest of the song, which is imbued with religious terminology, comes off as if the singer is referring to a person, or perhaps we can more accurately say a being. As delineated in the second verse, this is “a prophet” who is “mostly human”, though apparently not so entirely.

S/he is also described, in both the first and second verses, as being a “painter”. And as for the chorus, it implies that not only do the “heavens hearken” for this entity but also that s/he is “ready for the garden”, which may be an allusion to the Garden of Eden. So there’s obviously some pretty-heavy stuff being pointed to by these lyrics.

“Into the ether
Ready for the garden
Into it, deeper
Even Heavens harken
Reaching, reaching, reaching”

But what exactly that may be is once again is up to the listener to determine. Maybe the situation is such that longtime fans of Greta Van Fleet know what exactly “the Indigo Streak” is. But as for the rest of us, perhaps we can conclude by saying, also taking to mind a few of the other songs found on Starcatcher, that Josh and co. are relaying some type of religious idea that they chose not to express directly.
