Meaning of “Go Away” by Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper’s “Go Away” is an unconventional piece, in this we don’t commonly come across songs by a popular musician whereas the main subject is a groupie. But such is obviously the case in “Go Away”. The woman Alice is singing about is someone he “met… once back in ‘92”, apparently during one of his countless show stops. But as relayed, even this day she is persistently and incessantly hounding him.

Homegirl “spams… calls… texts [and] writes” even though, as also expressed in the chorus, he has instructed her to stop doing so. Or as more plainly put forth, she “just won’t go away”.

So as relayed in the third verse, the vocalist more or less feels as if he’s being stalked, that no matter what kind of personal change he may affect in the name of eluding this fan, she would still successfully ‘hunt and find him just the same’.

“She spams me every night
She calls, she texts, she writes
No matter what I do
No matter what I say
That girl just won’t go away
Why won’t she understand?
I’ll never be her man
That girl just won’t go away
Why won’t she just go away?”

Alice Cooper and Groupies

Alice Cooper, like many rock stars of his era, encountered his share of groupies, especially during the height of his fame in the 1970s. Groupies, young fans (usually women) who often sought close relationships or encounters with rock stars, were a notorious element of the rock ‘n’ roll scene during that decade.

While Cooper certainly experienced the wild rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle in his younger years, he’s always been quite private about his personal affairs, especially in later years after he got sober and became a born-again Christian. In interviews, Cooper has often spoken about the chaos and temptations of his younger years, without delving into specific details.

Moreover, Cooper has been married to Sheryl Goddard since 1976, and the couple has remained together since, which is notably long for rock ‘n’ roll marriages. They have three children together.

Given the above, while Alice Cooper certainly encountered groupies during his long career in rock music, specific stories or details are not widely circulated or confirmed by Cooper himself.
