Meaning of “Pocket Full of Rain” by The Paper Kites

“Pocket Full of Rain” is a piece which Sam Bentley described as being based on the concept of everyone having some sort of lingering sadness that they’re carrying around with them. This is what he refers to as “a pocket full of rain”.

At first, the lyrics read sort of like a love song, one in which the vocalist is willing to help mitigate the addressee’s depression, and presumably vice versa.

But even though a listener may hastily conclude that these two parties are lovers, the nature of their relationship is never specified.  And as the lyrics progress they take on more of a general feel, one in which by the time all is said and done, this song comes off as one more generally centered on the concept of committed friendship in the face of depression.

“‘Cause when I look out in the evening
See that moon’s still shinin’ bright now
And a pocket full of rain’s alright”

There’s nothing wrong with occasionally having sad days

Everyone has those days when they feel down or just “off.” It’s a natural part of the human experience. Emotions aren’t always constant; they ebb and flow, and that’s okay. Sometimes, we don’t even have a specific reason for feeling sad, and other times, external factors might trigger these emotions. What’s essential is to recognize and acknowledge these feelings, allow yourself to feel them without judgment, and seek support if you need it.

Remember, it’s alright to take a step back, practice self-care, and lean on loved ones or professionals if those occasional sad days start becoming more frequent or overwhelming. Everyone deserves understanding and compassion, especially from themselves.
