“Black & Thunder” by The Paper Kites
One of the permeating subthemes found throughout “At the Roadhouse” is that of the vocalist suffering from a serious case of depression, and so is the case with this track. More pointedly, the metaphor of “black and thunder” appears to point to an obstacle(s) that is preventing Sam from having an idealized relationship with the Lord.
Therefore, said terminology is probably meant to be symbolic of concepts such as sin and addiction, i.e. the types of mannerisms which are known to cause or make people feel as if they have affected such a spiritual severance.
“Black and thunder
Keeps me away
Black and thunder
Won’t you take it, take it, take it away”

Can the Lord help you live a more pious life?
In “Black & Thunder”, Sam appears to be entreating the Heavens to help him live a more pious life. But does God help us live more pious lives?
For many believers, the Lord is a guiding force in leading a more pious and virtuous life. Faith can act as a moral compass, directing individuals toward righteous actions and away from temptations or wrongdoings. Many religious teachings emphasize virtues like kindness, humility, and honesty, and adherents often find strength in their faith to uphold these principles.
Through prayer, meditation, and regular worship, believers can feel more connected to their divine source, seeking guidance and wisdom in times of moral ambiguity. Moreover, the sense of accountability to a higher power can also serve as a deterrent from sin or unrighteous behavior. By turning to the Lord, many feel they are given the grace and strength to live a life in line with their spiritual values and teachings.
