“I Don’t Want to Go That Way” by The Paper Kites

“I Don’t Want to Go That Way” is a simple piece lyrically, revolving around two general notions. First is the vocalist acknowledging that the current path he is one, the trajectory of his life so to speak, is one he doesn’t approve of or perceives as there being some type of “darkness” therein. Therefore, he wishes to change said trajectory.

Secondly, as relayed in the outro, is Sam perceiving salvation in that regard in the addressee. In other words, what’s being implied is that the person he is singing to has the wherewithal to save him from the “darkness”.

But whom that individual may be is never specified. Furthermore, the lyrics of this piece are very ambiguous. So whereas the general message being put forth is a simple one, i.e. the vocalist hoping that the addressee will help him effect a positive change in his life, the narrative still leaves something to the imagination of the listener.

“I don’t want to go that way anymore
There’s a darkness coming down
Waiting at my door
I don’t want to go that way anymore”
