Meaning of “Marietta” by The Paper Kites
This is a song of heartbreak, one in which the vocalist is lamenting his sweetheart having “moved to Marietta”. In other words, she did so without him. And the writer/singer, Sam Bentley, described this piece in an interesting way, as one in which the vocalist is questioning why the addressee has left, even though he already knows the answer and didn’t prevent her from doing so.
And that can be sorta gleaned from the lyrics, that Matt comes off as a victim though not necessarily convincingly so and, as implied in the fourth verse, may have even assisted his significant other when she decided to bounce, despite obviously not wanting her to go.
So now, what we are basically met with is a vocalist who is hoping that he will get over losing the woman he loves. But in the meantime, he is very much in his feelings.
“Maybe peace will come in time
Maybе somewhere down the line
Peace will come in time”
