Meaning of “Green Valley” by The Paper Kites

The lyrics of The Paper Kites’ “Green Valley” revolve around the character of “Emmy” and to a lesser degree though notable the vocalist being smitten by her. But more to the point is Emmy being depicted as sort of a female playa, a heartbreaker whom all the guys are attracted to but has “never held tight to another’s hand”.

And to reiterate, those who have fallen under her spell include the singer himself, who comes off as if he may have also been led on by Emmy, only to now, in the aftermath of her departure, be relegated to his undeniable and unfulfilled feelings for her.

Sam Bentley has noted when explaining the background behind this song that it was inspired by a “very beautiful” part of Australia known as Yarra Valley, where he and the rest of The Paper Kites rehearse at.

So that may explain why the track came to be titled “green valley”. But in terms of how that phrase is used within the context of the chorus, it is meant to illustrate that the singer remains pining for Emmy.

“I’d fly over green valleys
Green, green valleys
If ever she would call
I’d fly over
Green, green valleys”
