“Nang” by Jme (ft. Skepta)

Generally speaking, this song features the type of braggadocio and machismo you would expect from British grime emcees. However, in this particular case said boastings are centered largely on their lyrical skills. For example, as is illustrated in the intro, they are celebrating the fact that have indeed made it in the music game. And yes, there are what can be deemed allusions to their physical toughness and readiness to defend themselves in that regard. But primarily their expressed ferocity is centered on the vigor they bring to the stage. And by comparison, they are letting their competitors know that they do not match up.

So in a way, “Nang” is both a combination of the old and new schools. In terms of the latter, it is potentially offensive to Jme and Skepta’s enemies. But for the most part, as with old school hip-hop, it can be concluded that they are focusing primarily on their lyrical aptitude as their claim to superiority.

And as for the title of the song, it is said that in the UK the word “nang” is actually a slang term for something being cool or excellent. So the presumption is that, if that is indeed the context in which the artists are using the word (“nang” has other slang definitions also), then they are ascribing it to themselves. Thus in the chorus, the “them” they are referring to would be their own selves.
