“Never Ending Song” by Conan Gray

Seemingly gone are the days of Kid Krow, i.e. Conan depicting himself as some type of brooding teen, as now, in his mid-20s, he’s coming off more as a standard pop star. So it has been gleaned with the music video of Conan Gray’s “Never Ending”, as well as can be ascertained via its cover art.

But as Gray explained in relation to this song, his artistic style is to ‘disguise his sadness inside of upbeat music’. So whereas the aforenoted clip may feature the singer engaged in some hard boogying, its content matter is far from jovial.

And even in terms of the cover art, there may be a glowing star in the middle, in addition to the vocalist being dressed like a 70s’ disco star. But there’s also what appears to be a giant, radiated teardrop, and the overall tone of the image is dark.

The Lyrics of “Never Ending Song”

As Conan has also alluded to in his own words, this piece could’ve arguably been more aptly named something like ‘Never Ending Relationship’. In other words, the dissolution of a romance doesn’t always mark its actual end. Instead, when you’re dealing whereas you and the other party really became attached, the psychological/emotional ramifications of the breakup live on – sometimes, it would seem, even into perpetuity.

So the vocalist’s gripe, in addressing his ex, is primarily twofold. We can say that first of all, as implied at the beginning of the second verse, he feels that she proved to be the toxic party in their relationship. But secondly and more to the thesis sentiment at hand, in the aftermath of parting ways, Conan cannot get over her.

Or, as observed in the latter part of the second verse, even though their romance didn’t work out, still, in the process, they ‘grew too close’. So now the vocalist is suffering from a case of constantly thinking about his ex-honeybun, with there not appearing to be any cessation to this mental affliction in sight.

Or put alternatively, Gray is still in love with someone who he has already found himself incompatible with.

“And it goes on, and on, and on
Like a never-ending song
On and on
Like a never-ending song”
