Just like a soldier could lose a body part in a war, the singer figuratively asserts that she has lost her heart which denotes the emotional pains she has felt in past relationships. She has however not allowed them to break her completely as she consoles her self by saying that she’s still alive.
Sade explains that she has experienced many heartbreaks just like a soldier loses many battles. She however, remains hopeful that she will soon find a love that will stay. Her faith is strengthened in her waiting period as she firmly holds on to the assurance that true love will find her and turn things around in her life.
