“Take Me to the Light” by Francis and the Lights & Caroline Shaw (ft. Bon Iver & Kanye West)

There is a lot of symbolism flying around in Francis and the Lights & Caroline Shaw’s “Take Me to the Light”.  Those familiar with the headline vocalists know that they may have a tendency to sometimes use very heavy-handed metaphors in their lyrics. And such is certainly the case in this collaboration.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Bon Iver's Take Me to the Light at Lyrics.org.

What can be definitively ascertained is that they regard being ‘taken to the light’ as a positive phenomenon. And they are crediting the addressee with possessing the wherewithal and intent to help them reach this destination.  But honestly, it is unclear what “the light” actually is. Also the addressee is not specifically identified, although it has been theorized that this is a song about friendship. And if such is the case, then they are bigging up each other (i.e. their friends) for possessing the ability to ‘take them to the light’.

That being said, Francis Farewell Starlite has suggested that an updated version of this song may be forthcoming. And if so, the revised rendition may shed more light on the intricacies of this track.

Have Kanye West, Bon Iver and Francis Starlite worked together before?

Yes. Starlite, Iver and Kanye West have an extensive history of working together, dating back to 2016.

But outside of these three artists, there’s a massive team that worked on “Take Me to the Light”. Kanye and Francis and the Lights produced it along with Benny Blanco, BJ Burton and Cashmere Cat.

And all five of the producers have had a hand in writing the song along with Caroline Shaw, Chance the Rapper, Mike Dean, Lex Lugor and Justin Vernon.

  1. Christian says:

I actually interpret this song is one of two ways:

    1. Referencing lost loved ones that are still with us amongst the stars (we know there are stars above us, like we know we’re alive)

    2. Talking about someone you love that lifts you up, takes you to the light so to speak.

But I enjoy how others are interpreting it as well!
