“The Girls” by BLACKPINK
“The Girls” is a song associated with BPTG, aka Blackpink: The Game, i.e. a mobile videogame based on the popular girl group. Said software was released back in May of 2023. It was also around that time that YG Entertainment first teased this song.
The original intent was that the track and the game would be released concurrently. But the former, along with its music video, was delayed. The delay came as a result of the parties involved wanting to make sure that they got the single right.
Therefore, “The Girls” didn’t officially come out until August of 2023. And by the looks of things, the video still has yet, as of that date, to be released.
Ryan Tedder, of OneRepublic fame, co-wrote this song. He did so with a couple of members of Blackpink, Jennie and Rosé, in addition to Michel Schulz and Danny Chung serving as co-writers.
And to note all four members of the crew, i.e. Jisoo and Lisa in addition to Jennie and Rosé, provide vocals to this track.
Lyrics of “The Girls”
The lyrics of this song are rendered completely in English, and what they revolve around is an instruction presented in the chorus which reads “don’t mess with the girls”. Said girls would be Blackpink and presumably by extension their sistren, i.e. the homegirls they hit up parties and roll the streets with.
With that said, it isn’t as if the vocalists are presenting themselves as thugs or street fighters. Instead, the wording speaks to Blackpink’s “fast” lifestyle. This lifestyle is highlighted by displays of wealth and hard partying, coupled with the efficacy and success of their music.
And to note, there aren’t any proper nouns present in the lyrics. So this piece does have a general applicability, serving as a shoutout to all “girls” who like to live life in the fast and loud lane.
