“Where We Are” by One Direction

Back in 2014, One Direction embarked on their historically-successful Where We Are Tour. Usually, music acts name their tours, especially the major ones, after a particular project they are marketing. But in this case, the Where We Are Tour was actually in promotion of the band’s 2013 album “Midnight Memories”.

It seems that One Direction did record a song though, dating back to 2014, titled “Where We Are”, albeit one that was never officially made public. Or at least that’s the prevailing rumor concerning the origins of this track, which has leaked circa this writing, in mid-2023.

It has also been suggested that perhaps it is a product of artificial intelligence, i.e. a fake One Direction song that was created entirely via computer software. But until such a notion is possibly verified, it appears as if the world at large is taking this piece as being genuine.

And if it is real, in this case it wouldn’t be particularly unusual for the act at hand not to verify its authenticity, since One Direction itself hasn’t been officially active for nearly a decade now.

That said, according to Genius the writers of this track are the members of the group when it was at its peak, who are Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn.

The Lyrics of “Where We Are”

It’s sorta understandable why, if “Where We Are” is authentic, the band opted not to release it, because the piece does leave something to be desired in terms of overall understandability. For instance, it’s not clear if the singer is addressing a romantic interest or his compatriots. Furthermore, the meaning of the line the thesis sentiment revolves around, “forget about where we are and let go”, is not clear within the context of the overall piece.

Under the presumption that the addressee may be the vocalist’s significant other, it appears that Harry and the gang may be saying something like the two of them should retain their confidence in the relationship as they grow older.

In other words, the “immaturity”, “mistakes” and even “fun” of yesterday doesn’t really matter.  Or as more generally implied, the vocalist and addressee have done things which perhaps have put their union at risk. But henceforth the focus should be on loving one another instead of harping on the past, or something like that.

If that is indeed the message behind “Where We Are”, it is an interesting one considering that One Direction did proceed to break up shortly after this song would have been recorded. So it’s almost as if, if it is authentic, they were warning themselves against letting youth-inspired interpersonal tiffs and pettiness break the band apart. But having said that, it’s not even clear if they broke up due to personal beefs to begin with.

“Forget about where we are and let go
We’re so close
If you don’t know where to start
Just hold on and don’t run, no
We’re looking back, we messed around
But that was then and this is now
All we need is enough love to hold us
Where we are”
