“Who” by Lauv (ft. BTS)

The catch of this song is based on the singers asking the addressee “who are you”. Now said addressee would actually be their romantic partner. And what is prompting the boys to ask what would be considered a very-unorthodox question under the circumstances is that this lady has changed over time – and not in a good way. Basically the narrators no longer recognize their own girlfriend due to the way she is behaving.

In fact BTS summarizes the heart of the matter in the chorus when they tell her forthrightly “you’re not the girl I fell in love with”. And the way Lauv tells the story is something like the two of them having grown apart over time.  And now he is in a state of confusion as a result.

Meanwhile in the second verse, BTS comes off more as if their partner has now proven herself to be deceitful. So perhaps they are all speaking to the same type of situation. But what it boils down to is that they are not as in tune with their partner as they were before. And as such the relationship is now headed down the path where a breakup seems inevitable, as in the singers realizing that this lady is “not the one”.

Facts about “Who”

Lauv teased this track back on 29 January 2020. It was officially released by AWAL on 6 March 2020 as part of Lauv’s maiden album, “How I’m Feeling”.

“Who” is actually the second collaboration between Lauv and ultra-popular South Korean boy band, BTS. The first would be the remix of BTS’s song “Make It Right” in 2019.

This tune became the second song BTS ever recorded which is entirely in English. The first was on their collabo with Steve Aoki titled “Waste It On Me“.

It was actually Lauv who reached out to BTS in terms of doing this particular collaboration.

This song was produced and written by Lauv and Dallas K.  And the other songwriters are Zaylee Kelman as well as Why Don’t We members Corbyn Besson, Jonah Marais and Daniel Seavey.
