“Why You Gotta Kick Me When I’m Down?” by Bring Me The Horizon

Similar to their track “Heavy Metal”, in “Why You Gotta Kick Me When I’m Down”, Bring Me the Horizon addresses fans who criticize their sound.  However this song is a lot more personal for Oli Sykes, as it not only focuses on the band’s music but also Sykes’ private life and how outsiders respond to it. It seems that some people only wish the worst for him. In contrast, he questions what exactly is it that he’s done to make them call for blood.

His response in the choruses is that he’s not fazed by these ill emotions but instead welcomes them. In fact the more vehemently he is attacked, the stronger he comes. But once again, he has to ask the burning question which has prompted the composition of this song. And that query is what exactly has he done to these people that gave them the desire to see him fall.

The second verse takes a lighter tone. He acknowledges that some of these attacks are “all in good fun”. However, they are not coming from a place of love, as amusement generally does. So he advises his attackers that when they come, they should do so at full strength, as his counterattacks are nothing to be taken lightly.

The bridge of the song has Sykes addressing Bring Me the Horizon’s fans as his “daughters” and “sons”. However, the sentiment he is expressing towards them is not one of affection. Rather it is resentment for the constant bombardment of negative criticism and ill will. Now his relationship with them has been severed in a way that can never be repaired.

The ultimate conclusion from listening to this track is that Sykes is emotionally scarred by the way some fans have treated him, but at the same time he’s letting them know that he’s not a pushover.
