“Churches” by LP

To note, LP is not anti-God or anything like that. However, her personal idea of a true church is a place where all people, no matter what, can congregate and feel free. So for instance any religious building, such as presumably a mosque, where “a woman has to hide (her) head” is not a place where LP would like to visit.

And even if she isn’t anti-God, the vocalist can be deemed anti-religion. That is to say that she is one of those types of people who views religion, more traditionally speaking, as a major source of discontent in the world.

But just to note, LP is also a lesbian. And that would likely be an additional why in the second verse, she puts forth that she is “so lucky to be living in a time that’s more forgiving”. That is to suggest that in times past, the idea of a woman who is openly lesbian going into a church at all would have been borderline unfathomable.

But that is not to suggest that she is actually interested in attending a traditional house of worship anyway. Rather to LP, her “church is love” and a place where no one will be judged. And fundamentally speaking, this track serves the purpose of espousing her own brand of religion where adherents provide each other salvation, presumably through mutual love.

Takeaway

So even if LP isn’t anti-God, it is also apparent that she does not perceive adherence to long-standing religious rules as necessary to ‘saving our souls’. And it is a bit interesting that she decided to make this the title track of her album, considering that this is the only song dealing with a religious topic, and the overwhelming majority of the project is actually centered on romantic subjects.

So it’s as if LP really wants the world to know the belief system she adheres to, which at the end of the day really doesn’t seem that different from many of the more popular female pop singers.
