“Mentally Cheating” by Natalie Jane

What appears to be going down in this song, as in what the young vocalist (Natalie Jane) means by “mentally cheating”, is that she’s dating someone but finds herself having stronger romantic feelings for someone else. In other words, she may not be physically cheating, as in actually doing something with another person. But the desire is obviously there, and so are the related thoughts. And Natalie is sort of disappointed in herself for being psychologically unfaithful, if you will.

But the reason it was noted earlier that the vocalist is young is because even she herself appears to chalk up these complex emotions to the fact that she’s “just 18”. Owing to this, she ‘doesn’t have experience’ dealing with such matters, or however that assertion is meant to be interpreted within this context.

So basically the addressee of this song, i.e. Natalie’s established partner, is on the verge of being dumped. Or phrased otherwise, Jane’s solution to the aforenoted dilemma appears to be following her heart by hooking up with the new guy.

And she is obviously sympathetic to what her established boyfriend will go through emotionally as a result. But at the same time, in her own defense the vocalist lets it be known that their relationship wasn’t really that serious – or at least not that confirmed – to begin with.
