“Princess Diana” by Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice

As of the dropping of “Princess Diana” on 14 April 2023, Nicki Minaj, ‘the Queen of Rap’ as some call her, has been in the game for nearly 20 years, originally starting off as part of a crew dubbed The Hoodstars.

As implied by that title she has come a long way since, including recently starting her own label, Heavy On It Records. And it is that company – in conjunction with 10K Projects, Dolo Entertainment and Capitol Records – that is responsible for the release of this track.

Meanwhile Ice Spice, who’s a generation younger than Minaj, just came on the scene in 2021 and had her breakthrough the following year with “Munch (Feelin’ U)“, a track that didn’t perform particularly well chart-wise but still managed to establish her as one of the most-popular female rappers of the day. The said popularity is also in large part due to Ice’s unique and voluptuous looks.

Besides the two rappers, the other credited writer of “Princess Diana” is its producer, RiotUSA. The director of the track’s music video is Edgar Esteves. And to note, this is the first collaboration between Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, the latter of whom is a known fan of the former.

Of further note is that this song is actually a remix. The original “Princess Diana”, a solo effort on the part of Ice Spice, was dropped a couple of months ago, in January of 2023. And by the looks of things the remix will proceed to chart, considering that upon release it was voted by Billboard readers as “This Week’s Favorite New Music”.

Lyrics of “Princess Diana”

So what we are met with here, as to be expected, is by and large a braggadocious outing. For example, in the chorus, Spice calls out female rivals, noting that despite their negativity she’s “still getting money” nonetheless.

She also warns potential romantic interests not to ‘get their heads gassed’, i.e. think too highly of themselves, as she rather prefers men who ‘act like fans’ of her. And so it is basically with Ice’s verse also, as she proceeds to allude to her physical appeal, fame and dominion over the opposite sex.

Meanwhile, Nicki takes a more-mature approach. For example, she notes that has in fact “(fallen) in love with a gangsta”, which would be her husband, the prison-certified Kenneth Petty.

Furthermore, she seems to use the opportunity to defend Spice, referring to her as ‘the princess (of rap)’, which is notable because Ice’s musical talent – or perceived lack thereof – has garnered criticism in some hip-hop purist circles. And then, the Queen concludes her verse with a bit of her own braggadocio, pointing to her high level of success and sexual prowess.

So in reality, this song really doesn’t have anything to do with the late Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997). Rather, the title is meant to point to the idea that when the vocalists hit the streets, they attract attention as if they were Princess Diana, who was in fact extremely popular. Or put otherwise, the rappers at hand are notably famous.

“Like, grrah, keep it a stack
Bi–hes move wock’ ’cause they know I got bands (Damn)
They be chattin’, I don’t give a damn
And I’m still gettin’ money, I know who I am (Grrah)
Tryna be low, he gon’ hit up my ‘Gram (Grrah)
If he smart, he gon’ act like a fan (Damn)
Thinkin’ you bigger, they got ya head gassed (Grrah)
Bi–hes slow, so I give ’em a pass
Like, grrah, keep it a stack”

It’s a shorthand for “keeping your money in a stack.”
