“At the Door” by The Strokes

The Strokes’ “At the Door” is your quintessential rock tune in that there is discernible sentiment being relayed, but the specifics of the situation are shrouded by metaphors. And these metaphors are open to various interpretations. Overall it is obvious that the vocalist is trying to escape from something which reads like an internal issue.

So generally speaking, you can say that he is suffering from a condition akin to a negative, pessimistic disposition.  And what the lyrics of this song seem to focus on is how he is dealing with this unenviable situation. For instance, at first it seems like he’s trying to escape it or perhaps even is looking for help. But by the time the song concludes we find him “waiting from the other side”, which sounds as if he has decided to let this condition transpire in its own time. But again, this is just a surface examination of “At the Door”. For it is obvious that when penning these types of tunes, artists like The Strokes rely on allegorical and ambiguous language which are intended to conceal part of its meaning.
