“Ode to the Mets” by The Strokes

As the title (“Ode to the Mets”) implies, the stated reasoning behind this song is it serving as a tribute to the Mets. The Mets are actually a Major League Baseball team from New York City. The Strokes likewise are from NYC, so it’s only logical that if they are indeed baseball fans they would have an affinity for their hometown team.

But with that being said, anyone who studies the lyrics to this song will notice that the Mets are never actually mentioned. In fact we would venture to say that there are no clear allusions to the sport of baseball at all. Moreover the lyrics are so heavily-metaphorical that it can be challenging to ascertain what exactly the band is trying to get across. But going a bit out on a limb, it seems that the thesis may be based on the concept of nostalgia. In other words, the titular “Mets” are representative of “the old times” which are no more. Or another explanation could be that all of the fancy language used throughout actually points to the idea that the Mets, in the years leading up to the release of this song, haven’t really been that good of a baseball team, at least in the eyes of the singer. But again these are just theories. Yet what we do know is that this track does indeed, conceptually, have something to do with the Mets.
