“Bad Decisions” by The Strokes

The Strokes’ “Bad Decisions” is a song that is both simple and complicated at the same time. The lyrics are repetitive, thus lending to its simplicity. But they are also heavily reliant on ambiguous and perhaps even in some cases cliquish metaphors. However, at the end of the day it is discernible that what Julian Casablancas is singing about is a tumultuous romance that he is engaged in.

And basically, the idea he appears to be putting forth is twofold. First is that this lady he is dealing with is indeed a toxic partner or at least an individual whom his association with is not resulting in any good. And second is apparently his inability to part ways with her despite knowing this. Thus the titular “bad decisions” seems to be along the lines of him continually opting to perpetuate a relationship with her.

Indeed by the time the song climaxes, he seems to be putting forth an idea like now he is truly ready to call it quits. However, based on how the rest of the tune plays out, it is unlikely he will be able to dump her even if he tries. And why? Because he is beyond addicted to her love!

I think the song is about the pitfalls of his career in the music industry and the pressure that’s on him to return. He’s making bad decisions for us, hence the joyous tone of the piece and hes using the lover as an analogy.

  2. John says:

I think this video portrays cannibalism and human trafficking.
