“Cap Backwards” by Swae Lee (ft. Nicki Minaj)

The term cap backwards loosely has a history as a colloquialisms which can have diverse meanings. And it is not clear exactly what the phrase is supposed to mean within the context of the lyrics. But according to Nicki Minaj, it seems to somehow be related to linking up with “the plug”, i.e. the type of individual who could hook the artists up with some satisfactory “herb”, as in grass.

Indeed Swae Lee starts off the track by giving a shoutout to “coffee and herb”, which is apparently one of his favorite combinations. And the permeating theme throughout is something like he and Nicki portraying the role of lovers in something like a transitory relationship. Or looking at it through another lens, we could say that they demand specific attributes from a romantic partner and are now trying to feel each other out. For instance, Swae ‘loves a bad b—h’. And Minaj requires that a guy be “about the bag”, i.e. the acquisition of wealth.

And at the end of the day they come off as homeys, i.e. two sides of the same coin representing what they feel a true romance should be.
