Conan Gray’s “Greek God” Lyrics Meaning

“Greek God”, on the surface, literally talks about bullies and the narrator’s resolve not to be victimized by their actions. However, taking a deeper look and considering that Conan Gray tweeted that his track “Lookalike” and this track were written based on the same character, we can see that he is actually talking about an emotionally manipulative person.

The narrator begins by explaining that this person puts on a different outlook when deep down, they want him to like them. They employ bullying tactics of treating him badly in public, calling him names when they are trying to get his attention. The writer then explains that the reason they act that way is because they are insecure and probably hurt.

In as much as the narrator understands why this bully-like person is acting this way, he tells them that it gives them no right to hurt other people. He further cites how this person doesn’t really hate or want to ruin his life, but wants the opposite; to be his friend. The narrator goes on to stress that he will not be stressed or feel victimized by these stunts. He is tired of this person’s manipulative games and will not give them the cowered reaction they’d like to see.

In all, Gray is using this song to explore the idea that while the average bully or manipulative person might appear tough on the outside, in the inside, they are actually filled to the brim with insecurities.
