“Equal Dirt” by Rylo Rodriguez

On 30 June 2023, Lil Baby’s signee Rylo Rodriguez came out with his sophomore studio album, “Been One”. And it has done well for itself, marking the first time the rapper has made the top 10, respectively, on four different Billboard lists including the Hot 100 and this project peaking at number 2 on the US Indie albums chart.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Rylo Rodriguez's Equal Dirt at Lyrics.org.

Amongst the tracks featured on the LP is “Equal Dirt”, which Rodriguez is credited as writing alongside its producers, who are as follows:

The Lyrics of “Equal Dirt”

And looking at the lyrics of this song, it becomes obvious why Rylo is standing out amongst new rappers. When it comes to these romance raps, he really isn’t saying anything that hasn’t been tread on before. But his narratives, at least as far as these types are concerned (with the only other song of his we’ve looked at thus far being “Thang for You“), possess a certain degree of intricacy, and may we also say realness that many other emcees seem to lack.

But that said, what we are dealing with here once again is Rylo speaking to a troubled relationship.

Perhaps this type of subject matter is his specialty. And the first verse is the clearest, where he is lamenting over and sympathizing for a lost love who has apparently since been impregnated and dumped by another guy.

The second verse isn’t really that straightforward. For instance, it’s difficult to tell if the vocalist is referring to the same lady or not. But at the heart of the matter, from his perspective, is his girlfriend not taking him seriously or being patient enough to wait for his rap career to take off.

And overall they’re both messing up, cheating and things of the such, which is presumably the concept the title is meant to allude to, i.e. them committing “equal dirt” in this relationship. But the chorus verifies that this is a love song, one in which, comprehensively interpreted, there are a lot of distractions and screwing up in the relationship, but Rylo is cool so long as his shawty remains by his side.

“If lovin’ you is wrong, I don’t wanna be right
If being right means being without you, I’d rather live a wrong doing life
Rylo, she gon’ leave you if you go back broke today
Rylo, she gon’ leave you if you go back broke today
Long as I got you by my side, then they can talk ’bout what they wanna
Then I don’t even care what them other people say”
