“Everything” by Sevendust

In what may be classified as a painfully-indirect manner, what the lyrics of “Everything” appear to speak to the vocalist resolving not to let himself be run by the addressee. Said individual reads as if they may be Lajon’s lover, given how much pressure Witherspoon seems to be under in terms of conforming to this person’s ideology of him.

Relatedly, the singer admits that he’s “so insecure”, which we will take as meaning that he has self-esteem issues. So when you combine that reality with what reads like a nagging partner, what you get, as implied earlier, is someone who apparently feels as if he is being forced to change.

But the vocalist’s disposition in response is primarily twofold. First, as time has progressed, he has also grown “colder” in this relationship. Or another way of looking at that observation, theoretically and all lyrics considered, is as Lajon having become increasingly desensitized to being the victim of an unreciprocated or unappreciated love.

Secondly, he comes off as being the type of person who, regardless of low self-esteem or whatever, isn’t inclined to let someone else dictate his life. Or even if he is, that person would not be the addressee.

Put otherwise, despite not thinking highly of himself, the vocalist also understands his potential to “be everything” and “anything”.

And what it reads like he might be saying in that regard is that he’s going to earn the respect of the other party alright, but it’s not going to be by conforming himself to their ideologies. Instead, Lajon comes off as if he is more committed to following his own path and ultimately letting the chips fall where they may, even though he also makes it quite obvious that he doesn’t want to lose the addressee.

“So what do you wanna see?
I’m gonna make you believe
That I can be everything, yeah
I can be anything
I won’t change a f–king thing
Don’t walk away from me
No, you’re my everything
Yeah, I can be anything”
