“Fire” by TV Girl

As you may have guessed based on some of the other songs found earlier on the playlist of TV Girl’s “Grapes Upon the Vine” album, the “fire” being referred to in this track’s title is indeed that of the underworld variety.

But it can also be gleaned that when the vocalist expresses what can be interpreted as a willingness to “see” the addressee “in Hell”, that assertion can be taken literally if you will, but it also reads very metaphorical. That is to say that as implied by the second verse, such a commitment also applies to the here and now and the less-than-ideal relationship that the two of them share.

As for the relatively-lengthy bridge that follows, it actually buttresses both of those ideas. The vocalist doesn’t really perceive there to be any difference between “sinners and saints”.

Furthermore, it appears that he doesn’t particularly believe in Heaven or Hell but is rather more purgatory-minded. And that philosophy extends into the earthly plane, as Brad has concluded that neither “pleasure” nor “pain” dominate.

But by the time all is said and done, all of this is just a fancy way of the vocalist letting the addressee that he’s committed to their relationship, even though, reading in-between the lines, the latter would be a romantic partner that many people would not approve of.

“Ooh, ooh-ooh
And if I see you in Hell
I won’t mind the fire
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh
I won’t mind the fire
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh”
