“Big Black Void” by TV Girl

“Big Black Void” starts off with Brad noting that “probably soon” he’s “gonna go up to heaven to meet (his) Lord”. That’s a pretty interesting statement because on a couple of the earlier tracks found on Grapes Upon the Vine, the singer rather goes about establishing himself as someone who doesn’t particularly believe in such concepts. But notice that he does say ‘his Lord’, not ‘the Lord’.

But with that being said, all lyrics considered it’s obvious that this song revolves around the topic of death. Also, as can be gathered from the chorus, it more specifically deals with suicide. And as we have recently noted in the past, there appears to be more songs of this variety coming out of late, i.e. which read as if they actually advocate the act of taking your own life.

For instance, in the second chorus, the vocalist implies that he has tried to counter his depression using more commonly-accepted means, such as money and drugs, to no avail. And in the third chorus, he also exercises the possibility that instead of Heaven “you” may instead “find yourself in Hell”. If such proves to be the case, you should “kiss the devil on the lips and swear you’d never tell”, seemingly inferring that being cast into eternal damnation really isn’t a big deal.

So it’s as if Petering is actually looking forward to “slip(ping) right into that big black void” or, more simply put, dying.  In fact, as implied the vocalist is anticipating his departure from the mortal plane so much that he may even instantly bring it about himself.
